Doughty's notes for a biography and a typescript of the biographical sketch of landscape painter and lithographer Thomas Doughty, compiled from the 1930s to 1954. Notes are arranged chronologically by year of event or activity; some are handwritten and some are typed (334 p.). The actual biography is annotated with corrections (81 p.). It not only chronicles the life of the artist but also reveals the emerging art establishment in the United States during the first half of the 19th century. Two letters were added later to the collection and pertain to the whereabouts in 1954 of several of Doughty's works.
